Movie Colony, Palm Springs

The Movie Colony,
with a park
across the road.

The house sits in the Movie Colony, the residential neighborhood a few minutes north of the center of Palm Springs, long associated with the city’s Hollywood era. Ruth Hardy Park, named for one of the city’s founding council members, is directly across the road. Frances Stevens Park is about a ten minute walk. Shopping, museums, golf and the art museum are all close, and none of them are on the doorstep.

The year

When things
happen.

January
Palm Springs International Film Festival
February
Modernism Week, eleven days of mid century architecture
Feb to March

April
Coachella, across two weekends
April
Stagecoach, the weekend after Coachella
October
Modernism Week returns for four days
November
Greater Palm Springs Pride

Festival weekends change how long every drive takes, and the roads around the polo grounds in April are the clearest example. Coachella tells its own attendees not to trust their satellite navigation.

Nearby

What is
around it.

  • Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

    Ten minutes, six thousand feet

The rotating car climbs from 2,643 feet to 8,516 feet in about ten minutes. The mountain station is typically thirty to forty degrees cooler than the desert floor, with more than fifty miles of trails in Mount San Jacinto State Park at the top. There is snow up there most years between November and April.

Closed for annual maintenance for roughly a month each early autumn.

  • Indian Canyons

    Palm, Andreas and Murray

Three canyons on Agua Caliente land, on one admission, with the largest California fan palm oasis in the world. Open daily from early October to early July, and Friday to Sunday only through the hottest months.

    Closes periodically for tribal ceremonies.

  • Palm Springs Art Museum

    Closed Monday to Wednesday

Open Thursday from noon until eight and Friday to Sunday from ten until five. Admission is free every Thursday evening from five until eight, and under eighteens are free at all times. The Architecture and Design Center occupies E. Stewart Williams’ 1961 bank building.

  • VillageFest

    Every Thursday, all year

Palm Canyon Drive closes to traffic for about three blocks and fills with more than a hundred and eighty stalls. Six until ten from October to May, seven until ten through the summer.

  • Joshua Tree National Park

About forty miles to the west entrance

Roughly an hour of driving to the entrance at Joshua Tree village, which is the closest of the three. The park service is explicit that you should not rely on satellite navigation to find the entrances.

  • Golf

    Over a hundred courses

The Coachella Valley carries more than a hundred golf courses, a good number of them within twenty minutes of the house.

Being a good neighbor

A street,
not a strip.

  • No music or amplified sound outdoors at any time. Sound must stay inside the house and must not be audible at the property line.
  • Quiet time is between 10:00 PM and 10:00 AM.
  • One guest vehicle per bedroom overnight. Use the garage and the driveway first, and never block a neighbor’s driveway.
  • No parties and no events. The house is registered as a vacation rental, not an event venue.
